Friday nights are race nights for a collective of Haven Harbour Marina slipholders, customers and local community members. From early May to early September, this weekly tradition and opportunity for friendly competition has been happening off Rock Hall's shores for many seasons.

The contests, open to all area sailors, are scored events that largely take place to the south and west of Huntingfield Point.

Starting sharp at 6:00 p.m., the typical race can take many forms, with close to a dozen potential courses from which the group can choose. Some races are set along the longest route – five miles – beginning at Swan Creek Entrance Buoy Red 4 before heading south to Entrance Buoy Green 3, then westward off to Upper Chesapeake Channel Buoy Red 4, coming about and following the same track back to the starting point, doubling as the finish line.

This editor had the recent privilege of guesting on a race night ride aboard Minuet, a Beneteau Oceanis 393 (and last week's winner), owned by 19-year slipholder and lifelong sailor Dwight Dick.

"I enjoy the sailing, and the competition makes us all better sailors," said Dwight. "Boats from all over Rock Hall can and should join in."

Although bragging rights are up for grabs with every week's passing, those participating look beyond the friendly nature of competition – recognizing the outings for their sense of community building and abilities in friendship forging.

"The Friday night race series has rooted history in Rock Hall," added Bill Trainor, current contact person for the event which has been happening off and on in an organized fashion since the 1990s. "These races are all in the name of fun, and are a group effort to make it happen year after year."

Tonight marks the 2022 season's final race. As hopes for wind are invariably front of mind, a racer may never know the evening's conditions until hand at helm, swept about in the excitement and beauty of evening outings on the Chesapeake.
