As with most crises, the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) has brought out both the worst and best in humanity. Luckily for Haven Harbour Yacht Services, an unsung hero is doing her part to help protect our team.

Martha Bliss, with husband Dan, is a Haven Harbour Marina slipholder and Rock Hall resident. Martha took to her sewing machine after studying several how-to YouTube videos in an effort to help equip family and friends with batches of handmade cloth facial masks.

"Dan read about the Kent County Mask Challenge and I decided to contact the coordinator, Cheryl Hoopes, and began making masks in earnest," Martha said. "I've sewn my whole life and am famous for never throwing any material away."

Martha has made over 500 masks, dozens of which were generously given to the 30-plus employees at both Haven Harbour Marina and Haven Harbour South who are currently working in accordance with Maryland social distancing directives.

Over 300 additional masks were distributed to mask challenge coordinator Cheryl and area entities that included Bayside Foods, Village Hardware, Fresh Start, Chester River Seafood, the Rock Hall Town Manager's office, community meal programs and more.
Each mask takes roughly 12 minutes to construct. Why does she do it? Martha points to the nature of this situation as reason enough to lend a helping hand.

"People have been asking if they can pay for them, but I feel this is the least I can do to help us make it through these extraordinary times," said Martha. "Plus, it has helped me put all these scraps of fabric and elastic to good use!"

Martha is still sewing and will continue making masks as long there is a need. She may be reached at sailbrunelle@gmail.com if you are in need of protection.

Thank you Martha and those alike for your time and generous support of our staff and community. Our hearts go out to members of the Haven Harbour Marina Resorts family who have encountered this virus head-on or through the loss of a close friend or family member.

Does Rock Hall stand on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, or is it a riverside community of the Chester like neighboring Chestertown? Or, is it not so simple?
