Maggie's heats up winter with Muskrat Cookoff

Rock Hall’s quirky winter happening soon returns. The 11th Annual Maggie's Muskrat Cookoff is set for next Saturday, Feb. 7 from 1:00–5:00 p.m. – bringing hundreds of locals and visitors together to celebrate Chesapeake Bay heritage, friendly competition and seriously creative cooking. During the quiet season, this beloved event adds a burst of energy to town, making it the perfect excuse to bundle up and enjoy Rock Hall at its most relaxed and authentic.

The Cookoff began as a nod to time-honored Eastern Shore traditions. Muskrat, often spotted in Maryland’s ponds, marshes and rivers, was once a thriving industry here. During the Great Depression in particular, muskrat pelts were the mainstay of the winter economy once blue crab season ended.

"We enjoy bringing everyone together," said Brandee Vaughan, great-granddaughter of Memsey Dashiell Coleman – founder of the family-owned and operated Maggie's Coleman Tavern that has kept our town quenched for 94 years (and counting).

"We love the idea of everyone wanting to come, it’s a good time for all. The Everafter plays, Phat Daddy’s is set to sell BBQ, so many contestants are creative with their muskrat dishes – and we can't forget the ice cold beer and [Maggie's] Madness. I would have never thought our little bar would host such a huge event."

Make a weekend of it with a stay at the Inn at Haven Harbour. Cozy waterfront accommodations put you close to the cookoff festivities, while also giving you time to check on your vessel in winter storage and enjoy the peaceful charm of Rock Hall.

Weekends like these are a reminder that our town shines year-round – not limited to summer.

Does Rock Hall stand on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, or is it a riverside community of the Chester like neighboring Chestertown? Or, is it not so simple?
